Meet the 2019 American Language & Culture Team!

This summer we are looking forward to having an amazing team helping lead the American Language & Culture (ALC) Program at Stanford University. Learn more about this diverse cohort of university students and graduates representing perspectives from across the US, and beyond. They are excited to share their cultural perspectives, and learn about the many cultures of ALC program participants!

Abby Roberts

Abby Roberts is an International Studies and Gender & Women’s Studies student at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She is also pursuing a double minor in French and Middle East Studies. Abby enjoys learning new languages; she has been studying French for almost a decade, and began learning Arabic as a college freshman. Coupled with her passion for languages, Abby also enjoys traveling; having spent the past semester studying abroad in Bristol, UK, she was able to travel throughout Europe and visit a bunch of new places.

Abby is looking forward to working as a Program Coordinator for ALC for a few reasons. First, she has never been to California! Second, she is excited and grateful to have the opportunity to share her experiences with other university students. Last but not least, Abby loves building relationships with other people and learning about their lives!

Angela Zhao

Hello! I’m Angela Zhao, a rising sophomore at Stanford University. I’m exploring my interests in cognitive science, biology, and the formation of identity. I love meeting new people and learning about different cultures and how these cultures intersect with other aspects of identity. My hobbies include reading, exploring, trying out new foods, and taking walks. I’m excited to be part of the ALC team from VIA and I look forward to making new friends, building the community, and learning about everyone else’s cultures.

Daniel Cheah

Hi everyone! I’m Daniel Cheah, and I’m a recent graduate in NanoEngineering from University of California, San Diego. Ethnically, I identify as Chinese-Malaysian, but I was born and raised in the States. I love traveling to new places, meeting new people, and learning about their experiences growing up. In 2017, I studied abroad in Osaka, Japan for three months conducting research in the field of biomechanics. Currently, I’m an intern at Takeda Pharmaceuticals and hope to pursue a career in medical devices in the future. I really enjoy staying active by going running, hiking, and going to the gym. I have a strong passion for the outdoors and try to unplug from society through camping or backpacking. I’ve excited to meet you all this summer!

Jasmine Ky

Hello! I’m Jasmine Ky (or Jas) and I use she/her pronouns. After a gap year, I am going into my last year at Stanford undergrad as a Psychology major. I hope to someday be a piece of the puzzle in bringing more cultural sensitivity and inclusivity in the mental health care field. My hobbies include eating yummy things, art and expression, exploring, and making new friends. Let me show you the hidden gems of Stanford and the Bay Area, I hope we can make tons of memories together!~

Stefanie Ky

Stefanie Ky (she/her/hers) is a graduating senior from Holland, Michigan studying Psychology with a minor in Data Science at Stanford. She participated in VIA’s Design Thinking for Social Innovation (DSI) program in 2017 and was one of the coordinators for DSI this year. In her free time Stefanie enjoys visiting cute cafes & libraries, taking naps & taking walks, looking at the stars, and (online) window shopping. She loves meeting new people, building community, exploring new places, and experiencing different cultures, so she is excited to be returning to VIA as part of the ALC team!
