CME Day 7: Off The Grid & Inside Out

Off the Grid

We ate traditional foods in US. The style of taking out something to want to eat, and eating it outside being surrounded by other members was very cool, and I had a good time!!

After dinner, we went to the concert. Listening to the music which was created by mixing jazz with soul music, we enjoyed dancing!! Although I danced for the first time, I found it very exciting to dance with other people. I felt as if I understood the meaning of expressing what you want to tell by moving your body. This was a precious experience

Watching & Learning from Inside Out

Hi, this is Erika. I’d like to talk about our movie morning at March 4th.

We watched “Inside out” in Hirona’s room with snacks. The screen was a wall, so we had big screen. It’s exciting because I felt as if we were a family and watching the movie at home theater.

“Inside out” is the movie provided by Disney and Pixar. The movie started with the birth of Riley. In the same time, Joy who has yellow skin was born in Riley’s head. In a few moments, Sadness who has blue skin was born. Following them, Fear who has purple skin, Anger who has red skin, and Disgust who has green skin were born. They were Riley’s emotions so they controlled Riley’s behavior with some tools. One of the tools is “memory balls”. When Riley experienced something, a memory ball was made with a color which is connected to Riley’s emotion at that experience. For example, after Riley had her birthday party with her family and felt happy, the yellow memory ball of that party was made. When Riley was sleeping, new memory balls were sent to “long term memory” and many memory balls made “personality island”. For example, the yellow memory ball of the birthday party was one of causes to make “family island”. Riley had family island, funny island, friendship island, hockey island, and so on. In Riley, the chief of 5 emotions were Joy. Interestingly, the chief was various in each person’s (or animal’s) head. In Riley’s mother, the chief was her Sadness. In Riley’s father, the chief was his Anger.

When Riley was 11 years old, her family moved to San Francisco (we were there!) and found some difficulty. Father and Mother were about to quarrel because they were so tired for many troubles, but Riley and her Joy had many efforts to make them happy with doing funny things. At that night, Mother said “thank you” for her efforts. Riley and her Joy was happy to hear that.

At this age, Riley’s Sadness was treated as a troublemaker by the other emotions. Once she touched a memory ball, it changed to a blue sad memory ball.

One day, Joy and Sadness were accidentally sent to long term memory and were lost from Riley’s emotions. That caused Riley big changes. Many personality islands were broken. Joy and Sadness made many efforts to come back. In this adventurous journey, they made many discoveries. They saw Riley’s imaginary friend Bing Bong and ask him to be a guide. In long term memory, old memory balls were thrown away, which means they were forgotten by Riley. In this adventure, Joy learned that Sadness is as important as her because Sadness was the key of sympathy and Joy and Sadness were inseparably related. In other words, yellow memory ball had a blue side.

Unfortunately, Bing Bong had gone, that is to say he was entirely forgotten by Riley. But thanks to him, Joy and Sadness could come back at last. They could finally help Riley from loss of all emotions. Thanks to Sadness, Riley could cry and show her sadness to her family. As a result, Riley, Mother and Father could share their sadness. After that, memory balls got to be made with mixed colors. And Riley took back her all personality islands and made more other ones.

It was very interesting movie for me. It showed the system of memory and the development of emotions. At first, babies have only two emotions. As they grow up, they get other emotions and gradually develop more complex emotions. Although there are many opinions how many core emotions we have, I agree with “Inside out”. But what interested me most was variety of chief emotion. I think my chief emotion is Sadness because I am easy to feel sympathy, to be moved and to be made crying. I think sympathy is very important for doctors. But doctors or any other health care staff are told not to cry in hospitals. I should learn how to control my own emotions.

We all enjoyed this movie morning. Some days after that, we got to know that everyone had been crying on watching “Inside out” but pretended not to cry. We laughed together and shared our Joy when we got to know the fact.
