The following is the tentative schedule for the 2021-2022 cycle, as of March 2021.

  • Sept 2020 – Online applications open
  • Nov 15, 2020 – Priority application deadline (applications submitted after this deadline will be considered on a case-by-case basis)
  • Nov/Dec 2020 – First-round interviews
  • Aug/Sept 2021 – Additional first-round interviews; second-round interviews; finalist selection
  • Oct 2021 – Finalists confirmed
  • Nov 2021 – Jan 2022 – Prepare for departure
  • January – Remote training
  • February – On-site orientation
  • February-June – work at post
  • July – mid-year conference
  • July-November – work at post
  • Mid-December – wrap-up conference

  • February – short-listed candidates confirmed
  • Spring – prepare for departure
  • Late June – training in Asia
  • August-December – work at post
  • January – mid-year conference
  • January-May – work at post
  • Mid-summer – wrap-up conference and new fellow training
  • August – fellowship transition


The fellowship is fully funded by VIA, with support from alumni, grants, and our partners.

Not Included:
  • Approximately three weeks of training, covering program management, cross-cultural communication, leadership development, local language lessons, and teacher training
  • Comprehensive emergency medical and evacuation insurance
  • Living and housing stipend (based on local cost of living) while working at your post
  • Intra-Asia travel (from training to your post and wrap-up conference)
  • Language study grants and tutors are available at some posts
  • Vaccinations (cost will depend on individual insurance)
  • Initial visa costs ($150-$300, depending on country)
  • Roundtrip airfare to/from Asia (usually around $2,000)
  • Meals and optional activities during training and conference ($300-$500)
  • Personal travel while at post or after fellowship has ended

Additional Funding

Participating in the Global Community Fellowship, as a year-long internship placement, makes fellows eligible for funding through several competitive scholarships and/or grants. We encourage GCF candidates to explore these opportunities on our scholarships page and through personal research.
